I have a logitech quick cam express .ID 046d:0840 ,works on cheese and guvc view. Skype (version4.3)does not recognize it.I uninstalled skype, reinstalled skype through the Synaptic package manager . I installed V4l2ucp from the ubuntu software center,to no avail. this is a 32bit dell dimension 4700.I receive video calls and the audio is good too. Anyone have a suggestion?

Try at your own risk. I don't have any experience with this subject. I did see this: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/219 . Yes it is for Mint 17.1 which I think has the same kernel as UberStudent 3.13.0-37-generic. You might read that link and see if you think it would work for you. Please understand it does have a lot of terminal commands. If you are unsure then you don't have to try it. Good Luck! James Zerr

You should try the steps at the Linux Mint page. However, in the first command you have to run, substitute geany for gedit.

If that does not work, in a terminal run:

sudo apt-get install libv4l-0:i386

Now edit the skype launcher to preload the driver:

Right-click on Applications menu -> Properties -> Edit menu -> Internet -> Communication -> Right click on Skype -> Properties.

The command should be:

env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

There are directories online that state which webcams are most compatible with linux. I've provided one below.
