SAFE Network will not likely ever supplant our current World Wide Web, but I could see it [or something like it] potentially dominating a niche (such as a niche within academia).
Damion thanks, on this we are not in disagreement. The academic freedom to do things within something line Safe Network, the ability to bring in literature is an enormous freedom. I am currently finishing a degree and can get articles for free through the university, most of mine are early 20th Century, everyone that wrote them is long dead, yet outside University I would have to pay USD$35 per article, even a two page review!
Scholarship is not confined to academia, there are some brilliant, trained and knowledgeable minds that are excluded because of the way Universities have not handled the technical eprint revolution. And for me this has been a long battle, and I have given up with them as they have literally sold out to commercial vendors. Publisher's rights to withhold from the public has trounced the the author's right to be read.
