Hi, I'm new to UberStudent. I've been using Linux for quite a while now (started with one of the early brown Ubuntus, then switched to Xubuntu after hearing all the hubbub about Unity) but I'm more of an end-user veteran haha.
I decided to install UberStudent because it's my first year in university and the applications look very useful for when school starts up again!
(I really like using Geany, hoping it will be sufficient for programming classes)
I installed from the LiveCD over my previous Xubuntu and was a bit surprised to see my old panel/desktop configuration remain intact (save for the UberStudent logo in the middle). Fortunately the Whisker menu found the new UberStudent programs and I am in the process of exploring most of them.
The inclusion of GNOME-specific programs that Xubuntu didn't have is great, makes checking hard drives a lot easier! Installing other programs went well too (namely Skype, Wine, and Google Chrome).
So far there is one hassle I'm experiencing - the computer seems to shutdown slower than before.
With regular Xubuntu, in the Whisker menu I'd click Logout and it would prompt me to log out/restart/shutdown etc. After clicking shutdown, the Xubuntu splash circle spun around a few times, the computer shutdown normally after 5-10 seconds, and I'm out the door. Under UberStudent, the Logout button only
logs me out to the login screen. When I click shutdown on the login screen, the screen turns black with just the movable cursor present and it sits there for some time. So I don't know if the computer is shutting down or not. I really hate to do this but I usually need to leave quickly, and the computer seeming to hang like this results in me forcing a hard shutdown which is probably harming the system.
Perhaps I'm just too impatient and in a hurry.
In summary I'd like to know
[*]Is there a way to keep the UberStudent look in one session and the previous look in another session? (Both Xfce session and UberStudent session have the previous look)[/*]
[*]How to get the status of the computer during shutdown? (splash screen?)[/*]
If this is in the wrong topic please move it to another topic as I don't want to clutter up the introductions
but other people may have the same minor problems.
