I'm pleased to announce the release of UberStudent 4.0 (LTS) Socrates, Xfce Enduser Edition

About UberStudent
UberStudent is a Linux distribution for learning, doing, and teaching academic success at the higher education and advanced secondary levels. Much more than just an operating system, UberStudent aims to be a complete, ready-to-go, and "out-of-the-box" Learning Platform for education that facilitates not only immediate user-friendly productivity but cross-platform computer fluency among its users. Researchers, other knowledge workers, lifelong learners, and anyone who just wants a highly-polished computing platform will equally benefit from UberStudent.

  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS base
  • Linux 3.13 Kernel
  • Xfce 4.10
  • 32-bit and 64-bit ISO versions, for trying and installing on PCs and Macs
  • 32-bit and 64-bit OVA versions, for trying and running in VirtualBox

Version 4.0 represents many months of hard work and reflective thought to make it what I'm sure you'll agree is among the most polished and stable Linux desktops anywhere, period. You can read the Release Notes to get the full rundown, but the only way to really get a good idea of UberStudent 4.0 is to download and experience it yourself. :D

Hey Stephen, good work.

Is there a recommended upgrade path or is a fresh install from iso necessary?

I'm new to this and don't know which version of US 4.0 I need for my laptop.

i386 or AMD64 ??

While still running Windows, I find the following in Computer Properties:

Dell Inspiron 1545
Processor: Intel Core (TM)2 Duo CPU T6500 @2.1GHz 2.1GHz
RAM: 3.00GB
32-bit OS

I have managed to boot into the US 4.0 AMD 64 version from USB disk and from a HDD, but now I wonder if I should have installed the i386 version instead?

What happens if the wrong version is being used?

Your CPU supports the 64 bit instruction set so you should be good to go.

thanks! The day i tried out 3.0 live, you brought out 4.0. great Distro! Appreciate the included packages.
small surprise: I tried the rightmost battery icon link to power manager but it leads to sound settings instead.
