I'm booting from a DVD. The boot is very slow -- several minutes. Also, programs take a long time to open (more on first use, but still more than I'm used to). Is this an effect of the DVD? Is there some way, when I install, to speed things up? I'm using a Dell Optiplex GX520, 2.8ghz with 1.5 gigs RAM. Is that too little RAM?

This is entirely from running it from DVD. Consider: you are running an entire operating system, tightly compressed, from an optical disc. An optical disc. Entire operating system. ;)

The system will be snappy once installed. With 1.5 GB RAM, you can make things even faster by going to Settings menu > Administration > Session and Startup and UNTICKING the following:

DocFetcher-Daemon
Upload Tool
Xfdashboard Daemon
X-tile

Then go to Settings menu > Look and Feel > Desktop Effects > Least

Then go to Settings menu > Look and Feel > UberStudent Logo Toggler > Disable

Thanks for the quick and helpful response. I was worried when the installation took over an hour on my slow machine, but once installed and the starting programs that you mentioned diabled, it works beautifully.
