Hello again, i have installed xp on a pre existing partition to enable viewing a couple window discs that wine could'nt cope with. I new this would overwrite grub but with my limited knowledge thought that i would get back into uberstudent using the super grub disc (which worked) then use update-grub which never. It did find the new xp system and generated a new cfg. file but i still get the xp boot which being microsoft failed to create a menu that detects linux. How do i get grub back ?

Brian, I'm unfamiliar with Super Grub Disk, but you might try downloading http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-secure/files/ and burning it to disk, then booting in to it and running the program Boot Repair from the live session and seeing if it places grub properly. In general, installing Windows atop Linux is trouble, because Microsoft has no interest in OS interoperability. You have to install Linux atop Windows.

Hi,

you were on the right way. Boot your UberStudent live CD/USB (I'm unfamiliar with Super Grub Disk, too).
After typing
Code:
update-grub
you have to type (do this if all your operating systems are detected only!)
Code:
grub-install /dev/sda
where /dev/sda is your hard drive.
Verify it is called /dev/sda under Applications --> Preferences --> Disk Utility like in my picture below.
This command will restore Grub in the MBR.
This applies to Grub2 and Grub-PC which are installed by default in UberStudent

Good luck

That's the way to go. Plus it makes partitionning a lot easier.
