I'm pleased to announce the release of UberStudent 2.10 for 32-bit archcitectures, which is an UberStudent 3.0 Plato Preview release. :D

Download it here.

Release Notes

  • All known bugs from prior releases are dead, squashed, and I've spent weeks putting this release through rigorous testing to squash any that might otherwise have emerged.
  • Contains a development version of Thunar, v.1.6.2, which brings a long-requested feature to the file browser: tabs! The version of Thunar functions stably, so there's no need to be fearful about using this release for production.
  • 2.7 gig download, which is 1 gig smaller than the prior release. This was accomplished by
    - Making some program selections that avoided heavy KDE and mono dependencies.
    - Providing menu links for very weighty installations, e.g., one for installing spellcheck support into KeepNote rather than installing it by default trimmed 40 MB.
    - Removing some program redundancy.
  • Gorgeous desktop compositing turned on by default, provided by compton.
  • Some menu redesigning - there are submenus for Webapps and Documentation in each category, for example.
  • The UberOxygen icon theme is now comprehensively ported to XFCE and GTK.
  • Some new art
  • Much more!

Bravo, bravo!

Thanks so much, this is very exciting. I am waffling on whether to wait for a 64 bit version, or just grab it now, and change over later.

UberStudent is amazing, thanks to your dedication.

The 32-bit version has PAE (Physical Address Extension) support, so it willl at least use all the memory in your 64-bit machine.

Hi,

this looks promising :-) Like the fact you have made clear what is a local program and what a web app.

Maybe my PC is just too old (how do I check if it supports PAE, please?) but I post my problem in case others have got the same:
After the splash screen, I get the mouse showing up for two seconds and then the screen goes black. Typing Ctrl+Alt+F7 shows
Code:
saned disabled; edit etc/default/saned

I tried xfce4-session in tty and got "Cannot open display: .", so I tried startx, startx -- and startx ** which switches back to tty7 but I still have a black screen. Going back to tty1 shows "Loading Extensions GLX".

Although I've only recently discovered Uberstudent and you wouldn't believe the number of times I've said 'well I never knew I could find that on-line'.

I for one have found the current version to be rock solid, so all I can say is thank you very much for all your hard work.

I tried the preview, and I'm getting the same error Mr.Baum is getting. Tried the download twice, no results. I can hear the intro chime though

I got it to work! Odd question, I see that uberstudent.net is up and running! Any idea as to what the syntax is for a pool?

deb http://uberstudent.net/pool ?

Don't add the 3.0 repo and run it all yet. It's not ready for that. It's in testing.

I know that at least these three packages in the repo in their present state will break your system: uberstudent-xfce-default-settings, uberstudent-repo-configs, and docfetcher-installer. There's also an apport hook issue I'm trying to track to the offending package. Most of the packages are pretty much ready, though, except I need to go back and check their dependencies. I'm currently testing everything and working out all the issues; then, I'll build 3.0. :geek:

If you have a raring-based virtual machine or an installation of it on a harddrive section, and are game to help test things and don't mind things possibly breaking, please do use the repo and report back. ;)

Here's how you can add it:

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository 'deb http://uberstudent.net/ plato main non-free contrib'

wget -O - http://uberstudent.net/uberstudent.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -

Add only one package at a time if you decide to help with testing. ;)
