OK, now have both OpenOffice and LibreOffice available for use.
On internet got data procedure from "Unofficial Apache OO Debian repository (/projects/apacheoo-deb/)
Then "sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys 90127F5B"
Then to "/etc/apt/sources.list " file I added (used vi which has to be installed, but is in software list):
"deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/projec ... deb/debian
Then installed the various packages that comprise OO [some installed via the extracted apache OO deb download, others when accepted installer's option of using a online downloadable package].
As even after checking the software listing that all installed and applied, there was no recognition of its presence for use, then invoked it via command: "/opt/openoffice4/program/soffice" which not only brought it up, but also now has it listed as soffice under LibreOffice when click "other option" for openning a file.
So don't need to follow the AOO advice of deleting LO in order to use OO -- can have both available.
