What happens when you run
Code:
sudo apt-get install apt-file

It was trying to run precisely that command which prompted the series of blockages [my first post].

This cannot be a new installation. What did you do before this error?

Yes, is new [few weeks] and after updating, etc. was trying to download openoffice [Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz] from the "Unofficial Apache OO Debian Repository" which I had added to "my-added-apt-sources.list' and, together with its key [90127F5B -- now listed in "keys"] is now a listed repository source.
I had tried to simply download, extract, and open DEBS to its about 40 files and install each separately, but hung up at "openoffice-en-us" which was listed as installed, but not recognized as such for the following files where kept getting message that "openoffice-en-us" needs to be installed before these files.
As I had previously overcome this problem by simply getting it downloaded and installed directly by the uberstudent install program, I was trying to do so when got this message about needing first to run "apt-get install apt-get" and then to run "apt-get update". But that when problem arose; wouldn't do so as per "Errors" listed above.

It looks like you somehow deleted APT (Advanced Package Tools) from your computer. Since APT (apt-get, etc.) is no longer on your computer, you will not be able to use it to download/install itself (or anything else).

You can use wget to download the .deb file of APT, and then use dpkg (Debian Package tool) to install APT from that .deb file.
Since UberStudent 4.3 is based on Xubuntu/Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, you want the appropriate version of APT for Ubuntu 14.04.

If you installed 64-bit UberStudent you would download the 64-bit version of APT...
Code:
williamvw@uberstudent:~$ wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/apt/apt_1.0.1ubuntu2.13_amd64.deb

If you installed 32-bit UberStudent you would download the 32-bit version of APT...
Code:
williamvw@uberstudent:~$ wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/apt/apt_1.0.1ubuntu2.13_i386.deb

You would then use dpkg to install whichever .deb file you downloaded...
Code:
williamvw@uberstudent:~$ sudo dpkg --install apt_1.0.1ubuntu2.13_amd64.deb

Thank you staff for your response. Am now trying to get set-up on my 64-bit laptop [previously, few weeks ago, was setting up on my 32-bit which now works well using both libreoffice and openoffice].
When I entered your suggested code for my 64-bit version got: Resolving archive.ubuntu.com (archive.ubuntu.com)... 91.189.88.161, 91.189.88.162, 91.189.88.152, ... Connecting to archive.ubuntu.com (archive.ubuntu.com) 91.189.88.161 | :80... connected. HTTP request sent, awaiting response...404 Not Found 2016-10-27 19:26:42 ERROR 404: Not Found
Repeated this few times with same result.

The above shows that the wget command can succeed... when there is no interference.

Do you get the same 404 error if you paste the URL for the 64-bit .deb file into a browser?
