Hi,
I'm trying to select a server other than us.archive.ubuntu.com using the Software Sources, but
  • the mirror I'm looking for (tr.archive.ubuntu.com) is not in the list
  • I choose another mirror, but as soon as I click OK and update the cache I see that all release information is still tried to be downloaded from us.archive.ubuntu.com, in my case it just hangs there for hours and finally times out.
thank you!

The U.S.-based Ubuntu repos are by far the most powerful so they aren't normally a problem for anyone anywhere. That's why Ubuntu makes them default for everyone (except in the Chinese Ubuntu Krillin but that's another matter) and I follow suit. Distros like Linux Mint do too.

There very much should be a more elegant way to do this in UberStudent (as well as Linux Mint from whom I forked the Update Manager), and I promise to work on that. But here's how to right now change your Ubuntu sources to the mirror in Turkey.

Just manually edit the relevant apt file(s). Two minutes, start to finish. Ready? Go!

Code:
sudo leafpad /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Where the domain prefix says us, replace it with tr.

If there is a sub-domain, e.g., security.ubuntu.com, follow this pattern of just adding the domain pre-prefix: e.g., if security.ubuntu.com, change it to tr.security.ubuntu.com, and so forth according to the pattern.

Leave all non-Ubuntu domains alone.

If I truly must in the future overwrite the file to fix something (very unlikely at this point), you'll need to re-do this; but the scripts will make a backup for you in that case.

If you want the source codes available to you via apt-get source, repeat the same above steps for official-source-repositories.list:

Code:
sudo leafpad /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-source-repositories.list

Then just click "Update" in the Update Manager or in a terminal run:

Code:
sudo apt-get update

Done. Now your system will use the Ubuntu mirrors in Turkey you mentioned.

FYI, some Ubuntu mirrors may lag behind in hosting updates.
