 Post subject: old school emulation

Prior to qemu and virtual box I recall there being a way to have a linux os installed to a virtual hard drive and run as a program. It was not emulating in any sense but just running it as a program and if I recall there was little illusion that the two were seperate systems. On the up side I recall it being much faster than any of the aforementioned. I was just learning about linux back then and qemu and vbox came along before I learned about the older stuff. Anyone know what I am talking about?

I might not be remembering all of that correctly but you have the general idea.

I think it was user mode I was looking for, but it looks like I was wrong about it being fast.
