Post subject:  Another "which laptop should I get" question.

Hi
I know this has been asked before (in one form or another) but if it is possible I would appreciate a little advice/direction about my planned laptop purchase.
A member of our household is off to university and they are going to need a laptop. I had planned on getting a €250-400 machine and (irrespective of which OS it came with ) load it with something like LLite, but then I discovered Uberstudent and the plan changed. So, which machine to buy, there are so many brands with a multitude of features and specifications between and within each brands model range. It isn’t an easy problem to solve especially when I want a laptop that will work as best as can be achieved with a linux OS.

I have looked at the “Ubuntu Desktop certified hardware” page ( https://certification.ubuntu.com/deskto ... vendors=HP ) but finding something on the list that isn’t overly expensive (in the EU) is a problem. I have also looked at “Best Laptop under 500 Dollars 2017 Buying Guide” ( https://pc4u.org/best-laptop-under-500-dollars/ ) but in Germany their list is actually; Best laptop between 500 and 700 Euros....

So I am wondering, if I post a short list of potential machines, it is possible for someone to have a quick look comment on the one (if any) which is most likely to successfully run Uberstudent?

Thanks.

As the current version of UberStudent (4.3) is based on Xubuntu/Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, that Ubuntu certified hardware list is your best reference; it contains over 90 laptops that are certified for both Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. To maximize the hardware that you can get for under €400 look for refurbished/used laptops.

400 seems reasonable. How long will these refurb ones last?

I am typing this reply on a refurbished laptop that I have had now for approximately 5 years. I had to replace the battery earlier this year.
