Hi,
Just got that old machine, Win7, and I wonder if Uberstudent will run there. In a post, dealing with W540, I read about problems.
I will start Uberstudent from a stick-is this sufficient to find out whether Uberstudent will work there or not? What are the important parts of US I should try, check? On the long run I am planning to plug in a SSD, if there is a slot. But I do not know, if I can select Win or US during boot time. Perhaps I should install US as dual-boot first? If there is no slot I would remove the HDD and insert the SSD. What do you think-is that feasible? What to consider? Then I would install US from a stick, DVD or internet. What would be the preferred method?

Now a bit off-topic: What things to check on that old machine? Does a software exist to examine the machine? Or a benchmarking software? People posted melted cables close to the CPU, therefore failing loudspeakers.
I can use the machine for 30 days, when I am not happy, I can send it back!
Thanks a lot for your hints and suggestions!

PS: Please move that post in case there is a better place

How does UberStudent run on your machine from the live disk?

At first glance US works well, from a flashdrive. Those mentioned problems as it seems, are not existing. Wlan and brightness control are working. The fan is a bit noisy, but that is all the time, even if the CPU is nearly asleep, with Win7 or US does not matter. Costs 700$, pehaps better to spend that amount building a PC.
Kind regards,
Petra

You can definitely build a very nice PC from parts for $700.
