What software did you use to render your USB stick bootable? Try one of the live USB creators listed on our wiki, such as MultiBootUSB.

Placing the ISO File into a Bootable USB Thumb Drive:

MultiBootUSB:

Problem with Unetbootin and Uberstudent
I tried to use Unetbootin to create a bootable USB drive and then to install onto an HP EliteBook 8460p.. It booted successfully on the USB drive and I then did an install from the desktop launcher. When I tried to boot off of the newly created boot HDD drive the system could not locate the boot files.

Eventually I took the machine to the Linux manufacturer ZaReason in Berkeley CA and the proprietor Earl Malmrose was able to get it to work. Briefly he said that Unetbootin had not put the files onto the USB properly and so he had to rearrange things and rebuild in order to make it work. I now have a nice "new" Uberstudent install for my grad studies work. :-)

If I understood better the nature of the problem I would definitely write a bug report for Unetbootin. As it stands I can only hope someone will. (If I get a chance I will ask Earl to do so).
